History and activity

State Institution «Institute of Technical Problems of Magnetism of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine» was founded in 1970 by the director of the All-union research institute of electrical mechanics academician A.G.Iosifiyan. It functioned before 1991 as Kharkov branch of the All-union research institute of electrical mechanics (KB AURIEM), and was the main organization in the USSR for developing ships’ electrical equipment in weakly magnetic performance.

Creation of KB AURIEM was stipulated by the decision of the USSR’s Military’s Industry Complex (MIC) for providing stealth and security of magnetic field of the new classes of vessels with non-magnetic hulls such as the atomic submarines built according to the projects of Central Construction Bureau (CCB) "Malachite", CCB "Lazurit" and minesweepers, ship equipment of which became the main source of vessels’ magnetic field. The base of KB AURIEM creation was a scientific group of the Research Institute of Kharkov Electrical Mechanics Plant and the unique experimental base, consisting of magneto-measuring stand for checking ships’ installation external magnetic field. This stand was designed by the Central Research Institute (CRI) named after academician A.N.Krylov of the USSR’s Navy Ministry and All-Union Research Institute of Metrology named after D.I.Mendeleev of the USSR’s State Standards Bureau. It was built in accordance with the decision of the USSR’s MIC in the outskirts of Kharkov at that time.

The main result of KB AURIEM activity in 1970 - 1991 was the development of the scientific fundamentals of technologies for producing ships’ power electrical equipment in weakly magnetic performance and its introduction to 20 industrial enterprises of the USSR’s Electrical Technology Ministry. Designed technology, supported by 170 patents of the USSR has provided the reduction of the external magnetic field of ships’ industrial electrical equipment in 10 - 100 times. It has allowed to solve the problem of stealth and security of the USSR navy with non-magnetic hulls at that time.

KB AURIEM together with 7-th branch of CRI named after academician A.N.Krylov (Leningrad) and the Central Design agency, which were the designers of the USSR’s naves (Leningrad design-erection agency "Ruby", West design agency, Central construction Bureau "Malachite") began to participate more actively in direct making of the systems of naves degaussing since 1980. The main results of this work were development and introduction to shipbuilding new concept of standardization of the ship equipment magnetic characteristics by the spatial components of their magnetic moments as well as development of electromagnetic compensator systems for minesweeper magnetic protection and development of semiconductor power sources for naves windings degaussing devices, which are serially delivered to ship constructor enterprises of Russia up to the present time.

KB AURIEM was transformed into Research Institute of Electrical Mechanics of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense Industry in 1991. It was reorganized into the Branch of Magnetism of the Institute of Electrodynamics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1992, renamed into the Science and Technology Center of Magnetism of Technical Objects of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (STC MTO of NAS of Ukraine) since 15 December 2005 and renamed into the State Institution «Institute of Technical Problems of Magnetism of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine» (SI «ITPM of NASU») since 02 December 2013.

Corr. Member of NAS of Ukraine Rozov V.Yu. is the Institute’s chief since 1988.

The themes of scientific researches at the Center cover a wide range of scientific problems of the theoretical electrical engineering in the scientific area "magnetism of technical objects", which is directed on the study of the totality of magnetic properties of technical objects and phenomena, related to interaction of technical objects and external environment by means of magnetic field. Particularly, it includes modeling of magnetic field of technical object; control of their magnetic field, definition the physical parameters of objects by their magnetic field, definition of the magnetic interaction of technical objects and external environment, reduction of electromagnetic influence of objects of power engineering on a man and environment. SI «ITPM of NASU» has scientific contacts with leading centers of science in USA, Great Britain, Italy, China and other countries.

State Institution «Institute of Technical Problems of Magnetism of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine» solves such application problems of the magnetism of technical objects, as definition of magnetic parameters of spacecrafts and magnetic control of their orientation, "magnetic purity" of space-rocket technique, "magnetic protection" of objects, magnetic ecology  living and industrial areas and environmental protection, magnetic diagnostics of technical state of objects, alleviation of negative influence of the magnetism on technological processes. The developments of the Centre are implemented in shipbuilding and machine construction industry, space-rocket industry, fuel and energy supply systems, power engineering, organizations of public health services.
